This week's top 50: The big news of course last week was the Michael Jackson invasion of music charts following his death. Last week, 18 of the top 50 singles were previously-released Michael Jackson songs re-entering the chart, with 4 of those landing straight into the top 10. So what happened to those 18 songs this week? Three of those Michael had performed as part of Jackson 5 and The Jacksons, and all those 3 now drop out of the top 50 this week, plus Michael's solo hit "Remember The Time". So that leaves 14 out of the 18 hits from last week still in this week's top 50. As expected, things have begun to drop back with single sales. From 4 top 10 hits last week, Michael is down to 3 this week, and there is only one song that enjoys a large upward movement, that being "They Don't Care About Us" which bullets from number 45 to 18, just 2 places short of its original number 16 peak back in May 1996. Below is a list showing what happened to Michael's re-entering singles from last week which are still in this week's top 50. --------------------------------------------- LW TW MOVE TITLE --------------------------------------------- 3 5 -2 THRILLER 6 6 0 BLACK OR WHITE 7 10 -3 BILLIE JEAN 8 15 -7 MAN IN THE MIRROR 13 22 -9 THE WAY YOU MAKE ME FEEL 14 38 -24 BEN 16 20 -4 SMOOTH CRIMINAL 17 24 -7 BEAT IT 21 34 -13 DON'T STOP 'TIL YOU GET ENOUGH 22 25 -3 YOU ARE NOT ALONE 27 37 -10 BAD 30 26 +4 HEAL THE WORLD 36 45 -9 ROCK WITH YOU 45 18 +27 THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT US --------------------------------------------- A couple more of Michael's hits re-enter the top 50 this week. At number 42 there is "Will You Be There" - incredibly the 8th single to be released from his 9-times platinum "Dangerous" album, also appearing on the soundtrack to the movie "Free Willy". When originally released in 1993, "Will You Be There" enjoyed top 10 success in the UK and US, but managed to peak only at number 58 here in Australia. Upon re-entry into this week's chart, "Will You Be There" achieves a brand new peak of number 42 this week. Also re-entering for Michael Jackson is "You Rock My World" at number 50. It peaked at number 4 when released back in 2001 and was the first track from Michael's "Invincible" album which topped the charts and sold double platinum here in Australia. On the albums chart, things are a little different, with Michael making overall headway rather than overall decline as per the singles chart. The highest 3 selling albums from last week all belong to Michael and they retain those same three positions this week. But there's now some big movers including "Bad" bulleting up from number 28 to 13, "Dangerous" from 24 to 14 and "History" from number 48 to 17. This now gives Michael 8 of Australia's top 20 selling albums - shattering the record he set last week when he beat Pink by having 5 albums in the top 20. Album sales of Michael's material is also going gangbuster in America where it has been reported that sales of his albums since his death have already exceeded the 2.3 million mark, made up of 1.8 million CD albums and half a million in digital downloads. So now back to other chart action this week, and the Black Eyed Peas spend a third week at number one with "I Gotta Feeling" while Lady GaGa is stuck for a second week at number 2 with "Paparazzi". Linkin Park climb to number 3 with "New Divide", and thanks to Lily Allen's "Not Fair" and Michael Jackson's "Man In The Mirror" droppig out of the top 10, we welcome back re-entries by Miley Cyrus and Kelly Rowland. There are three new singles in the top 50 this week, managing to make headway against the huge tide of Jackson material in the chart. 14. NEED ME TO STAY - Tommy Trash featuring Mr Wilson CD single: (not released yet) Digital track: #12 Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0l9PAyIn20 Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/tommytrash Artist website: www.myspace.com/tommytrashspace This week's highest new entry comes from Australian DJ and producer Thomas Olsen who goes by the name of Tommy Trash. He reached number 5 on the Australian club chart in 2007 with his dance track "Slide". Since then, he has produced and remixed recordings for artists including Armand Van Helden, Delta Goodrem, The Veronicas and Vanessa Amarossi. Tommy's new single is titled "Need Me To Stay" and features a controversial music video that shows two women enjoying an erotic shower together and then being electrocuted by a hairdryer dropped on the wet floor which causes them to continue dancing. 28. FUNHOUSE - Pink CD single: (not released yet) Digital track: #21 Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaQd-l3QcFs Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/pink-funhouse-lyrics Artist website: www.pinkspage.com Pink's Funhouse tour is still going strong across Australia and so are her hits. Her "Funhouse" album is now an 8-times platinum seller, and this week sees her 5th single from that album enter the chart. The title track "Funhouse" debuts at number 28, with a bit of way to go if it's to get close to the success of her last hit "Bad Influence" which recently peaked at number 6. 40. HOEDOWN THROWDOWN - Miley Cyrus CD single: (not released yet) Digital track: #30 Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlnbmZK7GxU Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/miley-cyrus-hoe Artist website: www.mileycyrus.com Third and final new entry of the week belongs to 16 year-old Miley Cyrus, the star of Disney Channel's series Hannah Montana. A musical film adaptation of that series, titled "Hannah Montana: The Movie" is showing at cinemas, and the soundtrack album is currently in the top 10. From the album came Miley's ballad "The Climb" which recently peaked at number 5, and the latest single from the album is "Hoedown Throwdown" which debuts at number 40 this week. ------------------------------------------------------------------- The top 50 Australian singles chart Week beginning 13th July 2009 Week ending 19th July 2009 ------------------------------------------------------------------- TW LW HP WI ACCR TITLE - ARTIST ------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.
