Usenet.com.au News

17th June 2009

For those users testing Usenet.net.au you will have noticed a range of bugs that we're getting to as quickly as possible (and for those that know me, as quickly as my sim schedule will permit!). The most notable error at this stage include the search functionality. Again, thanks for helping us out.

For other users, you will have noticed yet a few more changes over the last week or so. We've set the short URL service to feed off one of our own truncating services (fat.ly) and thus far it's working okay. As always, as since the service is new, please let us know if you encounter any errors. We hope to have your own Usenet identity linked with fat.ly so you can track every URL you submit through the control panel - even without having to log in. This is on "the list".

We have altered the way in which messages render on your screen. We decided that the traditional method of quoting message text was a little ugly with all the arrows leading text (>>) so we are now including quote text in a block (picture below). We expect that some of our longer time users may get a little cranky so please let us know how you feel about it. Would you prefer an option to pick in a control panel? We're still yet to tidy up the formatting but you should get the idea of the feel we're after.

We will continue to build features as they're requested so please keep them coming!

The old style of messaging versus the new 'block' format

1st June 2009:

Usenet.com.au quietly turned 2 years old about 6 weeks ago! The site was originally built for the sake and survival of one singular newsgroup, aus.aviation, but since then it has become the primary means for a large number of people to access Australian text-based Usenet newsgroups. In the last few days we have fixed a number of bugs and implemented a number of new features into the site - and this development will now be ongoing as we build Usenet.com.au into a more robust and usable resource. We have a lot planned so please join our mailing list to be advised of fantastic new features.

In coming days and months you will see a lot more integration with social networking resources so you can more easily integrate your Usenet identity and contributions into other aspects of your online life. You will see social networking icons attached to every thread and/or post - but this is just a start. We've also added the Twitter API so that you can twit the active thread to your Twitter profile the same time you make your post... and you will continue to see this kind of integration built into the system.

Usenet is a very closed community with very few links with the outside world and we would like to help bridge that social gap between Usenet and the web.

Registered web based access is coming soon with a whole bunch of features that are normally reserved for traditional reading clients, so join our mailing list to be the first to know when we launch this new and exciting service.

On a side-note, each long URL in your post will automatically be truncated into TinyUrl's so there's no need to shorten your long link before you post.

We will start to add news updates on this page but you can always keep up-to-date with minor changes to the site via the version history.
